A Different View of Pollution

Air-PollutionWhen humans talk about pollution in the world it is always with a God complex. We are destroying the world and we will soon make it uninhabitable for us. There is a key point people don’t talk about when it comes to pollution and that is with almost all types of pollution the sacrifice of one life form can lead to the great benefit of another. The concept of pollution is a human creation regarding things we do that harms ourselves directly, but pollution as a concept to nature does not exist.

In 2010 NASA-supported researchers discovered a microorganism on earth able to thrive and reproduce using the toxic chemical arsenic. This discovery forced the scientists to change how they view life. Pollution to one life form can be the requirement of another. Take oxygen for example, plants do not utilize oxygen instead it is simply a by product of consuming C02. In much the same way human fecal matter is our by product. Humans live off the excrement of plants.

So the question becomes what is pollution and what is natural? Everything humans do is natural because after all we are derived from nature. Nothing we do can ever possibly defy nature. However, we are perfectly capable of destabilizing our own ecosystem and killing ourselves. The reason we need to reduce pollution is not to save nature but to save ourselves. This is an important distinction because we should not be afraid of replacing nature with our own technology if it means it can better support our survival.

As we move forward as a race we may figure out superior ways through technology to support human life that out perform our current ecosystem. We should not fear improving on nature for ourselves if it means the human race can survive and thrive.

Tribal Politics

Imagine for a moment that you are a part of an ancient hunter gathering tribe. For the last while food has been abundant but recently there has been a decline. A fellow tribe member emerges and proclaims that the tribe must start moving if it is to survive. The current leader rejects the idea and says moving is too risky and that what is going on right now is just a phase. This was the start of the first political parties revolving around the question should we stay or should we go?

In the above scenario you could start to imagine what arguments would take place and what people might start to believe. It not unrealistic to imagine that one side might actually consider the other side evil. If they are aware of all the same knowledge as you, then clearly the other side is just trying to kill everybody.

We like to think we are so advanced but when it comes to politics, we are still cave men. We allow choices to be made out of ignorance and we do not properly experiment. Since each side is against failure when either side makes a mistake, instead of admitting it, they come up with excuses. Our media on politics revolves around different types of biases to justify a particular point of view instead of what actually is correct. Much of it revolves around hyperbole, socialism is communism, and capitalism is the robber barons. We don’t care what actually works, we care about what makes us feel right. Further, if we have any enemy that actually does something correct politically, it is very easy for everything they do to be demonized.

It is no surprise that in the USA, or in most countries for that matter, you have a sharp line down the middle. In the USA the two sides are Conservative and Liberal. When you really boil these two sides down you come back to say the same basic question, should we stay or should we go? In the past this was one of the most important questions there was because the answer to it could mean life or death. Aggressive conflict over this question, even if resulting in death, would of been preferential to tribe survival.

Should we stay or should we go is still a valid question and it requires both sides. In order for us to have a superior evolution in human politics we need a couple things to be changed. First, we need to disregard absolutes, there are none. Secondly, we need to build better models and systems of analysis that can deal with the complexities of human behavior and better report on the consequences of applied regulation. Lastly, we need to realize that what is right might be variable based on the situation.

Money Can’t Change The World

imgresTwo people are stranded on an island. One person has a trillion dollars in cash and the other has nothing. It doesn’t matter if the trillionaire pays the other person one dollar or a trillion, the other person will not be able to build an airplane to get either of them off the island.

The above example also applies to the entire world population. An infinite amount of money does not mean an infinite amount of output. If we want to change the world we must understand that money can’t change the world, only human allocation can. If we want to cure aging, for example, we need to have more researchers. So far money has been our best system for human allocation. There is, unfortunately, not a very strong connection between changing the world and making money. A person in Africa building wells that will save thousands of lives might make significantly less than a Starbucks franchise owner.

To fix this problem involves mixing both capitalistic and socialistic ideals. Money that is collected in the form of taxes need to be distributed based on performance of philanthropic capability. This of course is currently faux pas because anyone who is doing charity work shouldn’t be making good money and this is completely backwards thinking. If money is our best method for human allocation then people doing things to help the entire world should make the most. Philanthropy should be a competition; we should be competing over who can feed the most people.

Bother conservative and liberal ideology are incorrect in regards to economy. While private enterprise can create quality, it cannot create wide spread quality. In contrast, while governments can create universal services, it cannot create universal services at peak quality. The best political system is one that utilizes socialism for infrastructure and capitalism for quality services on top. Infrastructure includes everything that allows humans to physically survive; these  include water, air, shelter, military/police, food, healthcare, roads, fire fighting, and garbage collection.

 

Understanding Random

People like to use the term random without actually really understanding what random means. The term random simply means an event has so many variables or inaccessible variables that it can’t be fully understood. Random is ignorance of the variables involved. When the variables of a situation can’t be accessed for one reason or another, science resorts to using statistical models. If a statistical model has any degree of success it is because it is picking up on constants indirectly.

Essentially what this project does is take a series of very standard waves and combines them to build a more complex wave form. You can play around with the different settings to get all kinds of interesting wave forms.  The more waves you add and change, the more complex the final form will become. If you were not aware of all the different waves that went into creating the final form, you would have a very difficult time trying to figure out how it was created.

Another example would be to drop a dice down a very small tube and then slowly increase the size of the tube on additional rolls. As the tube got larger it would become increasingly difficult to predict how the dice would land. In the same way, in the above wave example it might be easy to guess or predict a wave form if it is only made up of two waves, but it would become increasingly difficult to predict as you added more.

The problem is that because random activity is built on orderly components, it can sometimes mislead us to believe we can predict it. In real life we have another name for it, we call it luck. What we consider luck is more a product of timing than any innate characteristic that gives us an upper hand. There will always be the temptation of trying to figure out how things work by looking at a final form, but we must aggressively resist this seduction. We can only gain true understanding by analyzing the underlying orderly components, not the final production.

Unified Glory

glory-sunshine-from-the-edge_1152x864_71915I have talked in other posts about how so much of our lives is dictated by certain genetic traits we are born with. For every blessing I have received in my life I am always acutely aware of how I won a genetic lottery in order to be the person I am today. The average human likes to think they are completely responsible for their life and every event that occurs in it is the result of some action they did. No matter how much a human deludes them self, this simply is not the case. Human will power can accomplish a lot but it is not without its limits on an individual basis.

Some have exploited these ideas for profit such as the book “The Secret” which makes the claim that you can obtain anything you want if you just think about it enough. Of course the theology of the secret is merely a mask for satanism, not so much the religious satanism, but the satanist concept of self enrichment through aggressive self gratification. It misses the point that selflessness is a form of selfishness; everyone benefits when the world is a better place.

What humans are all increasingly interested in is the idea of improved quality of life and, fortunately, technology is allowing for the human race to take more control of this than ever. We are all trying to make strides to help the world, but a lot of humans are still falling through the cracks on a daily basis. Part of quality of life is the ability to experience glory. There are those will never truly taste any glory during their life time, and this not only makes me sad, it is also unfortunate. Every human being should have the chance to be recognized for accomplishment. Glory is most often the product of an action or event that helps humanity. Now it might seem impossible to expect that everybody could experience glory in their life times, but I think it is actually possible. That said, it would require some fundamental accomplishments by humanity.

1. End Aging
We need to stop aging. One of the primary reasons a human may not accomplish something noteworthy in their life time is because they don’t have enough time.

2. Reduce Population
An unfortunate consequence of a large population, besides the strain on resources, is the fact that the more humans you have the more likely they will end up doing menial things.

3. Improve Automation & End Scarcity
We are finally getting to a point where we can have automatons start doing things like cleaning up. This will allow humans to focus on much larger goals.

4. Improve Education Methods
The education system is terrible because it requires learning through brute force memorization. We need to create better methods of assimilating large amounts of data.

5. Space Travel
True space travel would allow for a significant increase in glory opportunities.

If we could accomplish even a small portion of these goals, many people would live much more gratifying lives.

There is No Win

Humanity is obsessed with winning. Motivational speakers will make their living talking about how not to fail. However, the true reality of the world wouldn’t make for a very motivational speech.

There is no win that comes without a loss, to either yourself or others. For every victory there is some form of sacrifice that occurred to make the victory possible. The best athletes in the world will sacrifice their social lives, future career potential, and their daily comfort just so that they can win.

Most entrepreneurs will fail on average at least four times before achieving success. The biggest losses come when we are incapable of accepting the reality of loss in the creation of victory. A perfect example is in a relationship if one partner is incapable of accepting a loss. The obsessive need to win can destroy a relationship because compromise is a form of mutual loss. For a relationship to “win” there must be mutual loss.

Our primary perception of victory comes from human competition but this isn’t necessarily the best model to portray victory. This model of victory and loss does little to demonstrate balance of priorities. Instead of teaching our children that they can achieve certain things if they sacrifice other things, we teach them that they must simply be better than others. The other problem with the traditional model of victory and loss is it does a sore job of explaining that time sacrifice can possibly compensate for genetic inefficiencies.

The idea of sacrifice applies to the entire human race as well. All victories we have made as a race have come at some kind of loss. Almost every choice we make is on some kind of sliding scale and as the times change the scale size may vary but the scale never stops existing. It is important to realize that everything has a cost and we must understand the sacrifices we will need to make in order to achieve victory going forward.

The New Tech Class

0624_artificial-intelligence_390x220 (1)There have been a lot of conversations going on about the need for people to learn how to code and the opportunities that are present. Since the creation of modern computing something interesting has started to happen, we have introduced a new form of literacy called coding. Traditional language is responsible for communicating status while the language of coding is responsible for communicating function.

This is a very new invention for the human race. We now have the ability to communicate functions to machines that will do actions without question. In the past if we wanted to get another human to do a function we would have to resort to trust, manipulation, or force. However with the advent of computers we now have the capability to have machines function through explicit language.

While it is new, we are starting to witness what I believe will be a growing trend. You will have two classes of people, those who can code, and those who cannot. Now this might seem absurd until you realize that something with significantly less power then coding already has a divisive affect on the world and that is common literacy. Those with computer skills are also starting to become the most rich people in the world as well. It is only going to get worse. As coding manifests itself as automation and things like 3D Printing become the norm, coders, and also those with technical skills, will increasingly have a significant edge over everyone else who doesn’t have the same capabilities. This doesn’t just apply to economics, it applies to warfare as well.

All wars, even religious ones, come down to economics. In the past the easiest way to do a large amount of economic damage was to kill other humans. The problem with this method was that both parties would lose. Increasingly humans are being left out of the equation entirely with things like drones. Further it is easier to attack through cyber methods then through traditional warfare. As the world becomes more and more globalized, the ability to steal digital work is far more valuable then having the capability to destroy and kill. Death and destruction will only lead to creating economic entities (countries or otherwise) that you can no longer exploit.

Now if this sounds like paradise, it’s not. Those without the capability to participate will be left in an absolute state of desperation and this can lead to internal violence. So while wars between countries may stop, internal economic pressures could result in an increase in violent crimes. The only way to combat such potential threats to civilization are to insure that as many people have the capabilities required as possible. If you have children, I highly recommend nudging them to learn how to code, even if they want to do something else with their lives. Their ability to code may be invaluable to them in the future.
